Scope and content The Senate Staff Oral History Project documents the professional careers and reflections of individuals who served on the staffs of Georgia's United States Senators from Richard B. Russell, Jr. to the present. Interview participants include members of legislative and committee staffs who worked in Washington D.C. and Georgia. Most interviewees held one or more senior positions including, but not limited to, administrative assistant (or chief of staff), staff director, legal counsel, legislative aide, legislative director, policy analyst, press secretary, regional director, and scheduler. The collection documents the personal experiences and insights of these staff members as they relate to their experience working for U.S. Senators from Georgia, the role of the United States Senate in government, the Senate as a workplace, and memorable campaigns and legislative debates. It also includes assessments of the legacies left by Georgia's U.S. Senators with regard to politics and public policy in Georgia and the United States. The collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, writings, financial papers, printed material, photographs, and artifacts. Family letters are mainly among Alexander H. Stephens, his father Andrew Baskins Stephens, his brother Aaron Grier Stephens, his nephew John Alexander Stephens, and his half-brother Linton Stephens. The letters discuss family matters and politics. One group of letters concerns the imprisonment and parole of honor of Alexander H. Stephens at Fort Warren (Boston, Mass.) in 1865. Correspondence between Alexander H. Stephens and various political figures includes Howell Cobb, Abraham Lincoln, Ben Hill, and Robert Toombs. Stephens and Hill write about the possibility of a duel between them because of an argument over politics. There is one letter from Clement Anselm Evans (1833-1911) to his wife, and three letters to him from John Brown Gordon, Joseph Wheeler and James Longstreet. Among the financial papers are deeds, and the wills of Alexander H. Stephens and his grandfather Alexander Stephens (d. 1813). An oversize folder contains a copy of an undated map of Confederate and Federal lines around Petersburg, Virginia. Artifacts include a walking cane of Alexander H. Stephens, locks of his hair, and a bloodletting tool.

The account books, probably from Henry's dry-goods business in Rockville (Conn.), include name of customer, list of items purchased, and price.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series XIII. Kennedy Assassinations concerns both the homicides of John F. Kennedy and his brother, Robert F. Kennedy. The majority of the documents, however, relate to the president's assassination and the subsequent findings of the Warren Commission. The files of this series include information prompted by the investigation, correspondence, reports, testimony transcripts, book manuscript drafts and proofs, memoranda, evidential material, manuscript drafts and proofs of the final commission report and clippings pertaining to the assassinations, the commission reports, and other related topics. Other material related to this series is in the Dictation series and in the Intra-Office Communications series of the Winder Papers. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books.

William Armstrong Smith was a Georgia state senator from the 34th District (Fulton County), from 1966 to 1974. During this time, Smith introduced various bills, served on and/or chaired numerous senate committees, and actively supported the development of the Republican Party in Georgia. The collection documents his career and to a lesser degree his campaigns as well as his continued interest in legislative matters after his senate career ended (1975-1978). The majority of the collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial records, and legislative bills. There are approximately six linear feet of publication materials produced by various sources covering subjects such as education, insurance, transportation, and planning. Another important aspect of the collection is correspondence Smith created after his senate career with Georgia politicians. Correspondents include: Howard "Bo" Callaway, John J. Flynt, Jr., Wyche Fowler, Zell Miller, Sam Nunn, as well as United States Presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon.

Included in this series are correspondence, mailing lists, newspaper clippings, speeches, guest registers, scrapbook, receipts, expenditure reports, printed materials, newsletters, tax returns, and political opinion polls. The purpose of the opinion polls was to reflect support that Talmadge might expect during an election year. There are also materials pertaining to an attempt by some Georgians to persuade Talmadge to run for governor of Georgia in 1966.

The wire recordings in this collection document Talmadge's successful campaign against M.E. Thompson for the Georgia governorship in 1948, immediately following the Three Governor's Controversy.

The Administrative files document U.S. House Representative J. Roy Rowland (b. 1926) who served twelve years as a Democrat from Georgia, 1983-1994. Rowland represented Georgia's 8th District, which included the cities of Macon (1983-1994), Albany, Valdosta, and Warner Robins (added to district in 1992). Rowland served on the Energy and Commerce Committee, the Veterans' Affairs Committee, the Public Works and Transportation Committee, and the Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families. He also was significantly involved in the National Commission on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality, and the Congressional Sunbelt Caucus in addition to other memberships on boards, task forces, and caucuses. A medical doctor, Rowland's primary legislative interests focused health issues. Rowland also authored or supported legislation in the areas of transportation, agriculture, education, defense, the environment, and foreign affairs. Papers primarily document the activities of Rowland's Washington, D.C., office and include legislative research files, bill files, legislative mail, constituent mail, speeches and statements, subject files, invitations, schedules, project and grant files, casework, clippings, and press releases.
